If you are looking for ideas on how to get around on Maui, let this be your guide. Maui is an island, but it’s big enough that you might not want to walk to your destinations. so let’s get started.

DO NOT hitchhike

Hitchhiking is illegal in the state of Hawaii. Just don’t do it. I’m really not concerned about the legality of it, more so your safety. Don’t put yourself in harms way. I’m not playing around with this one.

Public Transportation

Public transportation is available for the locals. I wouldn’t say it’s the best option, but it is there for you to use. Click here for routes, times, fares, etc.

Hotel Shuttles

Check to see if your hotel or resort offer a shuttle. Sometimes they offer pickup and drop-off from the airport and also take you to popular destinations. Also make sure you know where the pickup points are and what times they are suppose to arrive and leave so you don’t get stranded.

Tour Companies

I can tell you one thing for sure, there is no shortage of tour companies. You can get a hiking tour, a kayak tour, a zipline tour, a Haleakala tour, a helicopter tour, a sightseeing tour, a snorkeling tour, a virtual tour, a wine tour, a pineapple tour, etc. You name it, Maui’s got it.

Here’s a link to some sightseeing and guided tours.

Turo

Turo became really popular when the pandemic hit and all the rental car companies went dormant. It is still a viable option to get around as tourism is in full swing. Just be aware of what insurance covers and doesn’t. Maui has its fair share of tourist rental car break ins.

Here’s a 5 Star recommendation: NicoleTuro. If you decide to book with them, please comment below.

Uber & Lyft

Uber and Lyft is a pretty solid alternative. Especially if you have multiple people in your party. If you got little ones, you might need to inquire about that.

So convenient!

I want to point out that there is no reason why you should ever get a DUI (Driving Under the Influence). Be smart and use these services.

Click here to try Lyft (if it’s your first time, you get $8 in credit for your first ride)

Taxi

Yes, taxi’s still exist. If for whatever reason Uber & Lyft doesn’t do it for you, google says to call Royal Taxi Maui at (808) 874-6900.

And don’t stick up your thumb like in the 80’s and 90’s. People are gonna think you are are hitchhiking. And what is rule number 1? DO NOT hitchhike.

Rental Car

Maui now has the Kahului Airport Consolidated Rent-A-Car (CONRAC) Facility. It’s where you can find your standard Hertz, Avis, Budget, National, Alamo, Enterprise car rentals.

I always find that Budget has the best prices and be sure to sign up for the Fastbreak Program.

Rent a Bike or Electric Bike

Visit these guys at rideSMART. They will provide you with all the information you need to know.

Rent a Scooter

I hope you have some balance to be riding on these things. Make sure you know what you are signing up for. I cringe thinking of all the times I see people hold the throttle down, pop a wheelie and fall on their backs. Happens all the time! Scooters are also a hot commodity, they get stolen pretty often.

Again, know what you signing up for. Check this place out, Maui Moped and Scooter Rentals.

Summary

Now you know the many ways of how you can get around Maui. but before I let you go, here’s one more suggestion. Make friends before your trip. Find out if you have friends that have family or other friends here that could hook you up with a ride or tour.

Maui is an expensive place to be and sometimes you need alternatives. Make do with these options.

Be safe! Have fun! Aloha!
